Member Spotlight

CF13S is pleased to announce our Member Spotlight for the month of November is Mike Doyle (aka the_mikedoyle aka Mr. Drive 80). Mike has had a very busy 2014 (as you will read below) with accomplishments including (but not limited to) weight loss, competing with Team Powerful, finally getting the elusive muscle-up, incredible strength gains and one of the cleanest eating records we have seen!

Mike takes the motto “never stop learning” to the next level as he is always interested in reading, talking, questioning, and testing to see what works best for him. He puts in the hard work, but does not hesitate to reach out when he needs help, has a question or is unsure about something.

Mike’s drive, desire to succeed and interest in the world around him all contribute to his success both in and out of the gym, and are traits that we should all aspire to attain.

  1. Member since: February 2014
  2. Your favorite CF13S memory so far is … I’ve had a lot with this group. I think my first one was when Julie Vags told me at a party that you guys were happy to have me be a part of the community. That meant a lot especially since I was pretty new to the box and was having a pretty crappy year up until that point. The biggest “CrossFit” moment I had at 13 Stars was getting my first muscle-up which took me 4 years to get. I was on cloud 9 for a week.
  3. Your least favorite movement is … I have 2. Thrusters and lunges. Thrusters just wear you down soooo fast. Lunges suck because I cannot handle a lot of weight when I do them.
  4. Your favorite food is … I love cooking Paleo. I have been for years and my favorite meal every week is the simplest one I make. Chicken legs with a spice blend I saw in Practical Paleo. Real simple you preheat the oven to 375, spread melted coconut oil on the chicken legs, add a blend of onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, sea salt and ground pepper. Bake this for 40 minutes. Love it.
  5. If given the choice, your superpower would be … to have enough comic book knowledge to enjoy a conversation with CK, Swens and BVags.
  6. The improvement that you are most proud of, since joining CF13S, is … I’ve lost 15 pounds since February and gained a ton of muscle. The majority of weight that I lost was from June to Sept. That’s when I focused on diet. You cannot get anything done unless you focus on diet. Brian has been my go to behind the scenes whenever I have questions and he has given me great advice to keep me motivated and focused. When I fall of track I let him know and he motivates me to get back on it. The goal to be healthy isn’t a 30 or 90 challenge. It’s from now until the day you die. CrossFit 13 Stars is there to keep me on track each week and do things I never thought possible.
  7. If you were stranded on an island, the one member of the gym you would you need with you is … Mike Lind because he would be able to build everything we would need to survive out of coconuts and trees. Plus I’m sure he’d figure out a way to make booze somehow.
  8. Your fall goal is … My cf goal was to get a muscle up. I killed that in 1 week after writing it down. Now it’s not to not succumb to holiday eating traps. I have a big goal set for January 27. I took a picture of myself that day and had no clue how heavy I had gotten. I want to show a before and after photo of what I have accomplished this year on my personal paleo blog. That’s top of mind every time I think of ordering Cluck U at 2am on a Saturday night.
  9. What is something you thought about a member of CF13S that turned out not to be true? Hahahah, oh boy. There is WAY too much to type here and I would probably get myself into trouble. I will say that the group of people that go here are amazing. This is my 3rd CF and so far it’s my favorite. I definitely loved the people at the other boxes and still hold a place in my heart for a lot of them. But this crowd “gets” me and has accepted my messed up sense of humor. It’s refreshing for a guy who says some pretty f-d up things to get people to laugh. It’s powerful.
  10. Any advice for people just getting started? Set a goal first and get mentally prepared. Know your WHY for doing this. That will get you up in the morning at 5:50am to make the 6:15am class, or get you to the gym 5 days a week, or even get you to eat better 90% of the time. If you start any routine with no motivation or no true reason on why you are there then you will fail. Hands down, that is what makes working out effective. You have to know what you want and tell people “This is my goal, this is what I will achieve”. Putting it out there holds you accountable and then the universe gives you opportunities to make it happen. This box is an amazing place to accomplish all of your fitness goals. It will provide you with a great community, motivating coaches, Dan’s music playlist, etc. Everything is scary until you do it once. Don’t let your head get in your own way and just try it out. Sh*t will change your life.
