Very few people I know say to me, “Man, I got WAY too much sleep last night.” We’re busy, we tend to try and cram too much in each day, get to bed late, wake up tired … and then start the whole cycle over again. Everyone knows sleep is important, but I would wager most folks don’t exactly why it is important, and why it is even more important for athletes trying to perform better each day. Eric Cressey is one of my favorite strength and conditioning gurus and he has a post from 2013 regarding the four (4) hormones that sleep helps regulate (insulin, androgens, growth hormon and cortisol) and it still rings true today.
